History of Asokoro, Abuja.
Asokoro’s root can be traced back to the 18th century. The migrating people of Koro led by Dodonniya, in 1798, coming from Likoro near Zaria, journeyed through Kwaya and settled in Shishimpe. From there, they expanded to Galadimawa as they grew, then to Zumbo, the gorgeous place. The Gbayi people migrating from Bauchi took up roots in Kurunduma, and the Ebira community settled there as well. They named it Aso, meaning “it will be liked”. All these are what formed the Asokoro of today, meaning “the Koro people of Aso.”
There are also claims that Asokoro was named after Aso Rock, the large igneous rock that was speculated to provide coverage for the Gbayi people, who lived in its shadow. For the Gbayi People, Aso meant “victory” and the rock had been their fortress so they called it Asokoro meaning “home of the victorious people.”
