History of Agege, Lagos.
Founded in 1954, Agege got its name long before that from the Yoruba phrase “age igi,” meaning “tree cutters.” Back then, Agege was famous for its kola nut plantations. The Hausa people living there were known for cutting down these kola nut trees for a living. As traders and settlers, including the Awori sub-group of the Yoruba tribe, moved in, they started calling the area “Ilu awon age igi,” or “the town of the tree cutters.” This name eventually evolved into what we now know as Agege.
