History of Bariga, Lagos.

Bariga’s history dates back to 1630 AD when early settlers from Ife Awori arrived in the area. Drawn to its proximity to the river, they settled alongside other groups such as the Ilajes, leading to the formation of twelve thriving villages. Each village had its own Baale but was ultimately governed by the Oba of Shomolu. These villages: Abule Okuta, Bariga, Apaleyin, Mafo Owoku, Obanikoro, Adaranijo, Pedro, Aiyetoro, Felodun, Owode, Isale Akoka, and Ilaje formed what is known today as Bariga. The town has seen only three Obas, beginning with Oba Lamidi Soberu from Abule Okuta, followed by a ruler from Shomolu Central.
