History of Ebute Metta, Lagos.
Ebute Metta has a rich history dating back centuries. The name “Ebute Metta” translates to “The Three Harbors” in Yoruba namely “Iddo”, “Otto” and “Oyingbo”. Ebute Metta is nestled within the Awori Kingdom of Otto, with its capital situated in Otto, just before Iddo on the route to Lagos Island. The harbors were under the control of Oba Oloto of Otto, who exercised control over the maritime trade. The King’s agents were responsible for collecting taxes from ships that navigated through these harbours, bringing goods to Lagos.
In 1867, Egba Christians fled Abeokuta due to persecution and settled in Ebute Metta, Lagos. The Oloto, a local ruler, allocated land for them and they established a thriving community called Ago Egba. The Egba people built a church, schools and trading posts, and played a key role in Nigeria’s development as its first civil servants.
The Ago Egba community continued to flourish, constructing the Iconic Lisabi Hall, which was commissioned in 1938. Ebute Metta is divided into two main areas, Ebute Metta East and Ebute Metta West.
