History Of Ikorodu, Lagos
The history of Ikorodu is rich and reflects the success and heritage of its people. According to historical records, the ancestors of Ikorodu’s residents descended from the Remo stock of the Yoruba tribe. They settled on a plateau and named it Ikorodu, derived from “Oko-Odu” meaning Odu farm, in reference to the abundant Odu vegetable that grew there. This vegetable, used for cloth dyeing, was so plentiful that the early settlers named their new home after it.
Over time, the name changed to Ikorodu. The history leans towards Oga as the founder of Ikorodu, confirming the Remo origins of the town. The early settlers had facial tribal marks characteristic of the Remo people. The new settlement in the forest was initially used for hunting and farming by the sons of Akarigbo, Koyelu of Orile Offin Shagamu. They included Oga, Lasuwon, Rademo, Anoko, Osonusi, Igimisoje, Otutubiosun, Kilaro, Oladepo, and Sekumade.

Around 1630, a group of Benin migrants led by Eregbouwa settled in Ikorodu. Eregbouwa, from the royal family of Oliha of Benin City, was a powerful man whose name meant “king of peace and prosperity.” The Benin settlers integrated peacefully with the descendants of Akarigbo, leading to the town’s growth. The institution of Obaship was given to the Akarigbo lineage, while the Olisaship was reserved for the Benin settlers, with the Oba as the ruling monarch and the Olisa as the kingmaker and prime minister.
