Lekki Phase 1 is home to some of the finest and most expensive estates in Lagos, Nigeria, conveniently located near business districts like Victoria Island and residential areas like Ikoyi. But there’s more to Lekki Phase 1 than meets the eye. This article is a detailed guide to this highly sought-after area.

History Of Lekki Phase 1

The present-day Lekki Phase One was formerly a slum known as Maroko, a community in Eti-Osa, Lagos State. Before its demolition in July 1990, Maroko was home to low-income earners and attracted migrants from different parts of the country because of its close proximity to commercial areas.

The Lagos State military government, led by Raji Rasaki during the military regime, ordered the eviction and demolition of the community. According to the government, the community was below sea level and needed to be sand-filled. There were also suggestions that the community needed new infrastructure. The whole process cost about 300,000 people their homes. It is regarded as one of the largest forced evictions in Nigeria to date. More than two decades on, the old Maroko has transformed into what we now know as Lekki Phase 1.
