Operators in the construction industry are upset about how politicians are affecting town planning laws, saying the laws aren’t being enforced effectively due to a weak system.
Moses Ogunleye, a former President of the Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria, shared his views in an interview with The PUNCH. He mentioned that enforcing town planning laws is expensive and inconsistent. Many times, officials don’t follow up after serving notices, leading violators to think the government isn’t serious.

He stressed the importance of following laws without political influence. He mentioned that government officials need to enforce laws consistently to show that nobody is above the law.
Another town planner, speaking anonymously, mentioned that if laws were strictly followed in Lagos State, many buildings would be demolished.
Kunle Awobodu, the pioneer President of the Building Collapse Prevention Guild, highlighted that political interference makes it hard for civil servants to do their jobs effectively. He suggested counseling for those in power to reduce their influence on law violators.
Dr. Akinsola Olufemi, the National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Builders in Facilities Management, observed that enforcement is selective. He mentioned that town planners hold significant power and generate revenue for the government, which influences how laws are enforced.
Olufemi emphasized the need to change mindsets and culture to combat corruption effectively. Without addressing these issues, efforts to enforce laws will be ineffective.
The complexities surrounding town planning laws and political interference necessitate innovative solutions to ensure fair and efficient property transactions. As stakeholders strive for transparency and accountability, platforms like Krent offer promising opportunities to streamline processes and enhance trust within the industry.
