Lagos State Terminates Kantagua Market Construction Deal

The Lagos State Government has terminated its contract with Bridgeway Global Project Limited for the construction of Kantagua Market.

Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, disclosed this during an inspection of the site designated for the relocation of Ikeja Computer Village as part of the state’s urban regeneration program.

He explained that the termination occurred over two years ago due to the contractor’s failure to fulfill their obligations under the agreement. Babatunde emphasized that it is unlawful for Bridgeway or its representatives to collect any fees or funds from individuals for the market’s development after the contract’s termination.

Furthermore, he announced that the Urban Development Department in the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, led by Bola Bello, has assumed control of the Kantagua project. He instructed that all project-related activities must adhere to the guidelines and regulations set by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

Addressing concerns about subscribers who had paid Bridgeway for shop allocations in the market, Babatunde assured them that refunds would be arranged after proper verification by the government to ascertain the legitimate beneficiaries and amounts paid.

Babatunde cautioned against making any payments to Bridgeway and designated Bola Bello and her team as the government’s representatives for the market project until further notice.

Additionally, he ordered the arrest and prosecution of eight Bridgeway staff members caught collecting tolls and fees at the market gate.

Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, warned against environmental violations and road blockages within the market area. He also noted that illegal structures would be demolished to facilitate the market’s proper development.

Ogunkelu Sylvester, Chair of the Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development in the State House of Assembly, and other assembly members visited the market in response to a petition from market association leaders. They undertook a fact-finding mission, and their findings will be reported to the speaker for further action.
