The Lagos State Building Control Agency insists that developers must secure a letter of authorization before beginning construction on any building in the state.
Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the agency, emphasized this requirement during the presentation of authorization letters to developers of the Lagos Arena.

Oki clarified that the letter of authorization can only be issued to developers and builders after they obtain the necessary building/planning permit. This letter signifies LASBCA’s awareness of the development and its commitment to conducting regular supervision at every construction stage.
He revealed that along with the construction authorization letter, LASBCA issues a green sticker, allowing the agency to conduct inspections throughout the construction process. This measure aims to ensure the safety and habitability of buildings for occupants and owners.

Oki emphasized that before commencing any building construction in Lagos State, owners/developers must first approach LASBCA for approval of their building plans, after which they receive the authorization letter. This enables LASBCA’s professional team, including builders, architects, and engineers, to carry out stage-by-stage inspections from foundation to completion. Upon project completion, the owner receives a certificate of completion and fitness for habitation.
Meanwhile, Oki cautioned building material producers, especially block makers, against compromising the quality of their products due to rising costs of cement and other reinforcement materials. He stressed that such compromises could adversely affect the structural integrity of newly constructed buildings.
He further urged the public to adhere to building regulations to ensure a seamless construction process. Owners should also invite LASBCA for stage-by-stage inspections of their building constructions after receiving the authorization letter to commence construction.
