Lekki Demolitions: Commissioner Addresses Public Concerns

The Lagos State Government recently explained the removal of shanties along the coastal road in Lekki.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, clarified that the action aimed at public interest rather than harming citizens. He led a team on an inspection tour of the state, accompanied by officials including Special Adviser Mr. Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, and others.

Wahab emphasized the government’s commitment to a flood-free Lagos. They’re intensifying dredging and cleaning major drainage channels and canals across the state. By redesigning and reconstructing drainage channels like system 44 in Lekki, flooding risks during rainy seasons will decrease.

During the inspection, Wahab directed immediate cleaning of Ilabere Drainage Channel in Ikoyi. He also addressed concerns about contractors obstructing traffic with construction materials.

Wahab expressed satisfaction with the removal of shanties in Lekki and warned against illegal activities like arms possession during enforcement. He urged residents to remove structures encroaching on drainage channels.

Concerning pedestrian safety, Wahab advised using pedestrian bridges and avoiding highways to prevent accidents.

Special Adviser for the Environment in the Lagos State Government, Rotimi-Akodu stressed zero tolerance for environmental abuse, urging against blocking drainages with refuse or building materials. The government’s goal is to clear and dredge drainage channels for smooth rainwater passage during the rainy season.

The team also inspected ongoing enforcement actions to establish drainage setbacks in various areas, ensuring infrastructure resilience and continuous maintenance throughout the year.

Additionally, Wahab revealed that individuals caught with arms during enforcement activities have been handed over to the appropriate authorities pending charges. He emphasized the importance of residents taking ownership of public infrastructure and protecting canals and drains from refuse dumping.

Wahab also mentioned the introduction of the contractor responsible for concrete lining to chiefs and Baales in the Lekki 2 area, seeking their cooperation for timely completion.
