Sulaimon Yusuf, the National President of BCPG, shared these worries during the BCPG Lagos State chapter’s recent sensitization walks themed “Walking towards Zero Building Collapses” held in Lagos.

Yusuf pointed out that the expected rise in the cost of building materials such as cement, fittings, and wages for artisans and professionals in the built environment could lead to a further proliferation of substandard goods. This could occur as more builders seek to cut costs by any means necessary and an increase in the patronage of unqualified professionals and untrained artisans.
He stressed that the effects of these emerging challenges might not be immediate but could lead to even more building collapses in three to four years. The sensitization walk aimed to draw attention to this emerging problem and call for action.

Yusuf emphasized the crucial roles of the Ministry of Physical Planning and the Office of Urban Development in ensuring building standards are upheld and promoting research on local building materials.
He highlighted the necessity of looking inward to mitigate the effects of a depreciating currency and urged the Standard Organisation of Nigeria to ensure only quality building materials are available in the market.
Yusuf proposed increasing training opportunities for artisans and professionals in the built environment and providing scholarships for students pursuing courses in the field.
Additionally, he recommended reviewing regulatory fees and encouraged the government to view regulatory agencies as entities for regulation rather than revenue generation.
Yusuf concluded by urging the government to adopt fair taxation principles for revenue generation, akin to more developed nations, to encourage compliance and ensure safer construction practices.
