According to the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the government’s commitment to addressing climate change is evident in its concern for the rapid encroachment of desertification.
This was underscored during a recent visit by a team of environment experts from the World Bank, including officials from the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, to the ACReSAL Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) in Abuja.

Lawal emphasized the necessity for collaboration among various ministries, including Environment, Agriculture, Food Security, Water Resources, and Sanitation, as well as the World Bank, to ensure the success of the ACReSAL Project. He expressed optimism that this collaboration would facilitate inter-agency cooperation within the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The ACReSAL Project aims to address a myriad of challenges, including high degradation of natural resources, poor agricultural productivity, climate risks, desertification, increased poverty rates, conflicts, violence, and weak institutional capacity. It involves multiple federal and state Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), local governments, communities, and civil societies.
The minister highlighted the importance of these efforts, which encompass solutions to desertification, flooding, climatic variability, deforestation, extensive cultivation, overgrazing, bush burning, fuel wood extraction, charcoal production, faulty irrigation systems, and improper road drainage design and construction.
The collaboration involves a wide range of MDAs responsible for planning, economy, finance, works, agriculture, water resources, forests, transport, power, emergency response, climate, and hydrological information, or watershed/basin regulation.
Lawal expressed confidence in ACReSAL’s ability to fulfill its mandate and assured the National Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Abduhamid Umar, of the Ministry’s support.
The Task Team leader of the ACReSAL Project and Senior Environmental Specialist at the World Bank, Joy Iganya Agene, also recognized the successes achieved thus far and the support received from the Ministry.
