At the recently concluded 19th Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) in Abuja, stakeholders in Nigeria’s real estate sector renewed calls for the establishment of a National Housing Data Centre that would centralise land, housing, and finance statistics.
The proposed centre, they noted, would provide reliable data for evidence-based policymaking and help address one of the sector’s biggest challenges: the lack of accurate housing information.

But the proposals went further. Experts also advocated for a National Artisan and Housing Skills Activation Programme to strengthen capacity and improve construction quality nationwide. In addition, they called for an expansion of the MOFI Real Estate Investment Fund (MREIF) and increased collaboration between public and private capital to strengthen Nigeria’s fragile mortgage system.
Key Recommendations from the Forum
In a communiqué issued at the event, stakeholders urged the Federal Government to:
Krent is a real estate platform in Nigeria. Whether you're looking to buy, rent, or short let a house, apartment, land, or commercial space, check out our listings. You can also request specific properties.
Recapitalise and strengthen the regulation of Primary Mortgage Banks and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).
Streamline housing governance by creating a more coordinated structure to improve implementation across agencies.
Encourage innovative financing models such as non-interest mortgages, rent-to-own schemes, and diaspora-focused housing loans.
Digitise land registries and deploy GIS-based systems to enhance transparency, reduce transaction delays, and unlock dormant land value.
Integrate local manufacturers into the housing value chain through SME financing, tax incentives, and training to lower construction costs.
Address land titling bottlenecks, transfer mortgage disputes to specialised tribunals, and promote adaptive reuse of public assets for slum regeneration.
Ensure gender inclusion in housing policy, design, and leadership roles.
Urge state governments to revive housing corporations and provide critical infrastructure such as roads, water, and electricity.
Housing and the Economy
Prof. Jerry Gana, former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos and chairman of the event, lamented the persistent housing crisis. He cited high interest rates, inflation (23.71% in April), and currency devaluation as major reasons for the rising cost of construction materials and the inaccessibility of mortgages to over 90% of Nigerian workers.
Gana stressed that adequate housing is not just a social need but also a matter of economic stability and national security. According to him, poor housing deepens inequality and unemployment, while affordable housing fosters prosperity.
He also commended the Federal Government’s plan to recapitalise the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) from N2.5 billion to N500 billion, a move expected to expand access to long-term housing finance.
Where Krent Fits In
While policymakers and stakeholders debate large-scale reforms, renters and property seekers in Nigeria face immediate challenges every day — from lack of transparency to unreliable property listings and bottlenecks in accessing decent housing.
This is where Krent steps in.
Krent is building a technology-driven real estate platform designed to simplify the renting process. With verified property listings, 3D virtual tours, digital tenancy agreements, and secure payment systems, Krent directly addresses issues like:
- Transparency: Verified agents and digital records reduce fraud.
- Accessibility: Renters can browse properties from anywhere, cutting down the stress of house hunting.
- Efficiency: Digital contracts and payments speed up the rental process.
While national reforms are critical for long-term housing solutions, platforms like Krent provide practical, immediate relief to renters and property owners navigating today’s market realities.
As Nigeria moves towards digitisation of land registries and innovative financing, Krent represents the future of housing accessibility — one where technology makes safe, affordable, and transparent renting possible for millions.
